The state of Texas has passed Senate Bill 530, which requires a fitness assessment for all students in grades 3 to 12, starting in the 2007-2008 school year. The Texas Education Agency identified FITNESSGRAM as the required assessment tool.


This is not a test to determine the best athletes or the strongest students. It will not be presented as a competition, but as a chance to demonstrate what they can do. Parents will receive a report of the results for their student(s). The report is designed to help you evaluate your child's current fitness level and help you identify ways to promote healthy lifestyles in your family.


Pacer Test

Test objective: is to run as long as possible back and forth across a 20-meter space at a specified pace, which gets faster each minute. The children start running at the beep, then must wait until the next beep sounds to start running back. Each time across the gym (one-way) is a lap. If a child does not make it to the other side before the beep, they are to immediately turn around and head back. When a child misses the beep for the second time, they have finished the test.


Test objective: To complete as many curl-ups as possible up to maximum of 75 at a specified pace.Begin in the "down"position. Feet must be flat on the floor and not leave the floor. It is not permissible to allow another child to hold the feet down. Use the paper strip method. Curl-ups are to be done with the Pacer cadence; the student stops after a second failure to stay with the "beeps"or after the student completes 75.


Test objective: To complete as many push-ups as possible at a rhythmic pace.Start in the "up"position. Use a traditional push-up; the arms should form a 90o angle in the "down"position. Push-ups are to be done with the Pacer cadence; failure to stay with the "beeps"or if the student loses the correct form the second time indicates the test is over.

Body Composition

- The Body Mass Index (BMI) may be measured by the use of the TINITA Scale or using the Omron Body Fat Analyzer. The nurse also completes BMI for each student. Elementary students BMI is measured with two components (height and weight), this is not 100% accurate.

Back-Saver Sit and Reach

To be able to reach the specified distance on the right and left sides of the body. The distance required to achieve Healthy Fitness Zone is adjusted for age and gender.
